The Judith Neilson Institute Hyperlocal Summit was held online on 20th and 21st April 2021 and heard from international speakers Chris Krewson, Emma Meese and Rachel Howells.

The Summit brought together the people driving hyperlocal journalism in Australia with an aim to dig deeper into the experiences and challenges faced.
JNI organisers said "We will be testing some ideas we have developed for resources and structures to support hyperlocal organisations like yours. We will also be joined by one or two international guest speakers to share their experience of hyperlocal media in a different geography.
"Sessions have been recorded and will be available on the Judith Neilson Institute website for those not able to attend."

Chris is Executive Director of Local Independent Online News (LION) Publishers, which provides teaching, resources, and community to independent news entrepreneurs as they build and develop sustainable businesses. He’s a former VP of strategy for Spirited Media, former top editor at Philadelphia’s Billy Penn, and the former top digital editor for Variety, The Hollywood Reporter, The Philadelphia Inquirer and The Morning Call of Allentown, Pa.
Emma Meese
Emma Meese is the director of Community Journalism at Cardiff University. She manages the Centre for Community Journalism and is a director of the Independent Community News Network. Emma is a journalist passionate about the local, community and hyperlocal news sector and spent 14 years working at the BBC. Rachel Howells Rachel Howells is the Training Project Manager at the National Union of Journalists in Wales. Rachel graduated from a PhD in journalism studies from Cardiff University in 2016. Her thesis focused on the democratic deficit in towns that lose their local newspaper (Port Talbot was her case study). Alongside her studies, she was a founding director and editor of the Port Talbot Magnet news service.
